Planning

The Hughson Planning Division plays a critical role in the overall character of the community and the quality of life of its residents. Land use planning is a recognition that the City does not have to wait and react to proposed development, but can define its vision of the community including, where growth will occur, how neighborhoods will look and how new areas connect to existing areas. Through these efforts, the Division works to achieve the City Council’s goals and objectives relative to the physical development of the community.

The Planning Division is responsible for administering the city’s land use planning and entitlement process as well as managing, implementing and when necessary, updating the General Plan. The General Plan looks decades into the future and provides the fundamental basis for the City’s land use and development policy and represents the basic community values, ideals and aspirations over this time.

Planning serves as the first stop for development proposals of any kind and provides assistance to developers, architects, builders, business owners and residents seeking approval of their development application.

The Division serves as staff to the Planning Commission, a body comprised of five residents of the City, which advise the City Council on land use and environmental decisions.
